Aretha Franklin is Reportedly Alert and Talking as Family Remains Hopeful She’ll Pull Through

The family of music legend Aretha Franklin has shared that they remain hopeful regarding her condition following reports that she is gravely ill.

“I saw her a week ago Friday and we talked for about 45 minutes to an hour,” her nephew, Tim Franklin, told People magazine. “My brother was there on Saturday and she was alert, talking, laughing, joking,” Tim shared. “She’s watching TV, so god forbid she sees all of this ‘Aretha’s dead,’ so I don’t want to dampen her spirits on that.”

Earlier this week, family friend Evrod Cassimy broke the news about the Queen of Soul’s health.

“I am so saddened to report that the Queen of Soul and my good friend, Aretha Franklin is gravely ill,” he said in a tweet on Monday. “I spoke with her family members this morning. She is asking for your prayers at this time. I’ll have more details as I’m allowed to release.”

Rumors of Franklin’s deteriorating health have been around since 2011, with unconfirmed reports surfacing that she was battling pancreatic cancer. As news of Franklin’s illness made its rounds, veteran music executive Clive Davis announced a tribute concert for the singer set for November 14 at Madison Square Garden. It is unlikely that she will perform or attend the concert.
