A petition has launched demanding radio personality Charlamagne Tha God (born Lenard Larry McKelvey) be removed from The Breakfast Club over a 17-year-old rape allegation.
On Wednesday (July 11), a Care2 petition had garnered more than 1,700 supporters at the time of publishing, alleging it was in support of Jessica Reid, who accused Charlamagne of rape in 2001. According to TMZ, Charlamagne cooperated with the claims when they first arose and plead guilty to contributing to the to the delinquency of minors since underage kids were drinking alcohol at a party he threw. However, he was cleared from the case and took a DNA test that failed to produce evidence that he came in contact with his accuser.
Reid was only 15 when she first brought the claims against Charlamagne, who believes the rested case is only resurfacing to ruin his reputation.
“More than seventeen years ago, Charlamagne was accused of a sexual assault. He never had sexual relations or any physical contact with the accuser and even provided DNA to prove it,” his attorney, Marty Singer, says. “At the time of these claims, Charlamagne cooperated fully with authorities, and after the investigation, this charge against him was dropped. Charlamagne has spoken about this many times over the years in public, including in his book. While Charlamagne has empathy for all sexual assault victims, he cannot take responsibility for a crime he did not commit.”
Charlamagne is reportedly considering legal action to protect his name.
