Idris Elba has been tapped to star as The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Netflix.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Elba will also direct and produce the project under his Green Door production banner, and will also be producing original music for the film. Producers Fred Berger (La La Land) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Midnight Special) are attached to the project as well.
Michael Mitnick (The Current War) is penning the script.
The Hunchack of Notre Dame, which is perhaps best known as the ’90s Disney animated adaptation, is a 19th-century gothic romance that follows Quasimodo, a hunchback, who falls for a gypsy named Esmeralda.
Last month, Netflix announced Elba would star in Turn Up Charlie, a comedy in which he plays a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, who is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a manny to his famous best friend’s problem-child daughter.
