Fox Sports announcer Brian Davis is in hot water after using a racially insensitive phrase to describe the outstanding performance Russell Westbrook had when the Oklahoma City Thunder hosted the Memphis Grizzlies Wednesday night (April 11).
After watching Westbrook turn a steal into points with a sweet assist, Davis said, “Westbrook is out of his cotton pickin’ mind.”
Davis’ comments created a ton of controversy on Twitter, as that particular phrase has spurred debate forever about whether it’s a racial insult given the history of slavery and cotton farming in America or a folksy tie to Bugs Bunny. However, it’s hard to believe the latter since cartoons have a long history of depicting racial stereotypes.
See some of the reactions to Davis’ comments below.
Westbrook—who entered the game averaging 25.6 points, 10.1 assists and 9.9 rebounds—became the first player in the league’s 72-year history to average a triple-double a second time.
