A Christian school in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin is under fire after fourth-grade students were asked to debate why slavery was a good thing. According to Fox6 news, students at Our Redeemer Lutheran School were handed the assignment on Monday (Jan. 8). They were asked to “give three good reasons for slavery and three bad reasons.”
“It’s highly offensive and insensitive. I was in shock. I couldn’t believe they sent something like that home,” parent Trameka Brown-Berry told the outlet.
Brown-Berry said the issue not only affects her 9 year-old-son but the “students who weren’t black” as well.
“That’s what keeps racism going, she added.
The school’s Principal Jim Van Dellen apologized saying “the question wasn’t supposed to have an answer because there are no good reasons for slavery.” He said he’ll be meeting with Brown-Berry on Wednesday.
It’s unclear if the teacher who handed out the assignment is being reprimanded.
