An aspiring model from New York was found dead in Jamaica, lying on the side of the road with her throat slashed.
Desiree Gibbon, 26, of Queens, left her home for Jamaica in October to stay with her father in hopes of earning money for film school. She stayed at her family’s hotel in Montego Bay and had plans of shooting a documentary about life on the Carribean.
Desiree’s mother, Andrea Gibbon, said her daughter was close to landing a job at a tourist bar when she was murdered.
“She had planned to go to film school. She wanted to direct movies. But she wanted to earn money for it, she didn’t want us to pay for it. She wanted to make it on her own,” Gibbon told CBS.
According to NY Daily News, Desiree’s body was discovered Sunday morning in the small northwestern town of Anchovy, about 4 miles from Montego Bay.
Jamaica Constabulary Force Supt. Michael Phipps said investigators believe Desiree may have been familiar with the person who killed her. She was found fully clothed but her cell phone was missing.
Phipps said investigators suggest there was a struggle and it’s unclear if she had been sexually assaulted. An autopsy is reportedly scheduled for Dec. 5.
