While hosting the 2017 Soul Train Awards on BET, Erykah Badu took a knee in honor of Colin Kaepernick. With the promise of an exciting opening musical performance Badu interrupted the band to say, “I know I usually do a big, elaborate musical number right here, but right now I feel I need to do this,” she said before taking a knee. “This is for Kap. Kap we appreciate you, for giving up your life, your dream, for your belief in us.”
Kaepernick, who remains a free-agent presumably over his national anthem protest, was recently named “citizen of the year” by GQ Magazine. Since 2016 he has dedicated his time to fighting inequality and systemic injustice.
