Andre 3000 is a hip-hop pioneer but he hasn’t released new music for quite some time. Despite a few recent guest appearances, 3K’s last project was Outkast’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below album in 2003.
As for why he hasn’t hit the studio, 3K said in a new interview with GQ Style that he fears he has lost the edge needed to compete with younger artists.
“I don’t have the pulse anymore,” he said. “Rhythms change every generation. The intensity and the drums change. And I’m not on the pulse. I can’t pretend. It’s kinda like watching your uncle dance. So the only thing I can do is this kind of novelty, off thing for them.”
3K ended the discussion about new music by comparing his creativity to Floyd Mayweather’s knowledge of boxing and knowing how many fights he can handle before hanging it up.
“I’m slowing down, and I see these young kids coming up and I was them. And at a certain point, no matter how Mayweather you are, I think it’s classy to be like, You know what? [brushes off hands]. I think I have, like, maybe two more Mayweather fights.”
A few months ago it was reported that Andre 3000 will star in the sci-fi movie High Life, a film about convicts being sent to a black hole in exchange for a reduced prison sentence.
