The classic science fiction novel Dawn by award-winning author Octavia E. Butler has been picked up by Ava DuVernay (13th, Queen Sugar), Charles D. King’s Macro and Victoria Mahoney for adoption into a television series.
This marks the first time that Butler’s work has been adapted for TV, Deadline reports. Mahoney will pen the series about an African-American woman who works with aliens to resurrect the human race 250 years after a nuclear war. King and DuVernay will serve as executive producers.
Octavia E. Butler is a prolific author who used sci-fi to address issues of race, gender, and hierarchy. In 1995 she became the first writer in the science fiction genre to be awarded the MacArthur Fellowship aka the Genius Grant. She passed away in 2006.
