In 1991, Dr. Dre brutally attacked journalist Dee Barnes for interviewing former NWA rapper Ice Cube at the height of their feud. Despite being one of the best producers to ever do it, the incident, along with several others domestic disputes, has always overshadowed Dre’s career.
In a clip from HBO’s The Defiant Ones, the Compton native delivers a heartfelt and sincere apology for his transgression:
“Any man who puts his hands on a female is a fucking idiot. He’s out of his fucking mind, and I was out of my fucking mind at the time. I fucked up, I paid for it, I’m sorry for it, and I apologize for it. I have this dark cloud that follows me, and it’s going to be attached to me forever. It’s a major blemish on who I am as a man.”
This isn’t the first time Dre has apologized for the beating. During a 2015 interview with the New York Times, he issued an apology to “all the women” he’s hurt.
