Marvel Studios gave a small group of journalists an exclusive first-look at the upcoming Black Panther film on Sunday (April 16). Both footage and concept art was shown during an open house at the company’s Los Angeles headquarters.
Black Panther will be Marvel’s first black superhero movie—and it sounds pretty dope.
The footage shown to the journalists put the spotlight on the supporting cast rather than T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), following his female bodyguards the Dora Milaje (Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira) escorting the prince to his coronation (via Entertainment Weekly).
One scene showed Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) single-handedly taking down a group of armed mercenaries in the jungle. There was also a glimpse of Civil War‘s terrorism czar Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman) bantering with the returning Avengers villain Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) about a “mixtape.”
Michael B. Jordan’s villainous Erik Killmonger was absent from the footage, but viewers were shown concept art of Killmonger with long, flowing hair.
“I’m super excited about an African king who is also strong enough, fast enough, smart enough to do some of the things that T’Challa is going to do in this film,” director Ryan Coogler promised in the teaser.
Black Panther will hit theaters in 2018.
