Two children in the central Virginia town of Dillwyn were killed as they ran across the street to their school bus Thursday morning, according to police.
A tractor-trailer hauling an estimated 75,000 pounds of mulch with its yellow flashing lights activated, approached from the opposite direction hitting the children as they crossed Route 15, Fox News reports.
Tori Perez, 5, and Jaiden Bartee, 6, both died at the scene.
A man identified as one of the children grandfather said they were cousins. According to one of the children’s parents, an adult family member was with the children at the bus stop.
The tractor-trailer driver, a 66-year-old man from Dillwyn, has a valid commercial driver’s license, according to police, and the tractor-trailer was in compliance with commercial vehicle regulations.
No charges will be filed, authorities say.
